Good morning, DMV. It’s Tuesday, Feb. 10.

After days of a biting chill, the Capital Weather Gang says today will be a bit milder. Phew. Will it melt more of the “snowcrete”?

At least a few stretches of sidewalk in my neighborhood are still covered in ice-encrusted snow that is now a dirty brown. Other parts of the sidewalk where narrow slivers have been dug out are still navigable by only one person at a time.

On the plus side, aesthetically anyway, many of our yards are still wintry white. After the brief dusting of snow Friday night, my husband scattered birdseed outside. It filled my family with so much joy to see the tiny overlapping lines of bird footprints on our front doorstep.

In our backyard and our neighbor’s, my family and I have long been observing signs of wildlife that use our shortcut through the two adjoining yards. I see pellets of dark-colored scat on the “snowcrete,” and after a few days, they sink below the surface, leaving little cylindrical holes on the icy snow.

Yesterday, I noticed several fresh animal prints in the neighbor’s yard, including deer that appear to be slipping and sliding on the “snowcrete,” too, creating long lines with their cloven hooves.

🪷 Meet ups

A lot of people I know have been following the Walk for Peace. Today is the 108th day of the Buddhist monks’ journey from Texas to D.C. They’re scheduled to be at the Washington National Cathedral at 1 p.m. today. Tomorrow after their (invite-only) lunch stop at St. Mark’s Capitol Hill Church, they plan to start at 1:30 p.m. to walk to the Lincoln Memorial. I plan to be at both of these gatherings.

Tanya Priest, a West Coast native who lives near U Street in D.C., sent me this pic she took on Sunday.

“I was tired of hiding inside from the cold, so I went out to get my 10,000 steps,” she wrote in an email. “Despite the cold and the snowcrete, everything was so beautiful that I walked all day and ended up with 20,000.”
